Hello friends! As you know I am obsessed with the Moment lenses. They will transform your phone photography game. I decided to create a video featuring the Moment Macro Lens. Decide if it is worth it for yourself!
The moment macro lens has a 25mm focal length and diffuser lens hood. Although I do not remove the lens hood often, since you can basically just set the hood on the object and know it will be in focus.
I shot macro maybe two or three times on m DSLR and never on my film cameras. It was not my thing. I am into landscapes, portraiture, abstraction…and pretty much everything else. That said, when I bought my first set of Moment lenses, the V1’s, I did purchase the Macro thinking it could be fun. I used it about as often as I did with my DSLR, one or two times.
When I did the recent upgrade to the Moment V2 lenses my partner convinced me still purchase the Macro because you never know. I don’t know if it was the frugal side of me that feels things should be used or if I simply felt like I wanted a new exploration in my photography, but I started reaching for the macro more often.
It is a high quality lens and easy to use. Soooo much better than those “Phone Photo Hacks” where someone actually suggests dropping water on your lens to magnify….just don’t do that. The one con that I noticed is you have to be so close the subject feels like it touches the lens surface sometimes. This is a challenge, especially for critters.
Out in the Field
I have casually grabbed the lens in the last few months on my hikes and intentionally went to a Garden in Portland to use this lens specifically.
Things I enjoyed shooting with the lens:
- Textures or Surfaces (Great Backgrounds)
- Water Droplets
- Insects and Small Critters
- Mushrooms, Fungi and Icky things
- Plants of all kinds
- Ice and Frozen Things of any kind
While I enjoy this and it creates a new level of growth with my photography, I do wonder where I will go with this or how it will continue to find its place in my practice. I have a list of cliche “wants” for shots that I would like to capture just for my own satisfaction. After this, we will see where this goes. I will be in Peru, the Amazon, Orlando, and Aruba this year so we will see what happens during travel with the macro.
Things I want to try and get in the future:
- Eyes
- Butterfly close up
- More Food Close Ups
I would love to see any macro shots you capture! Please share them and tag me on Twitter @phonephotopro or Instagram @bethanymccamsihÂ
